Watercolour
Estranged Studio
Watercolour brings water, light, and digital life together in an ever-changing landscape. Three towering waterfalls form the habitat of strange digital creatures, inspired by life in our oceans. They emerge, move, meet, and disappear again. Meanwhile, the water continues to circulate: the same flow that keeps this world alive. In this way, Watercolour plays with water as both a source of life and a fragile raw material. Use the scanner to add a new organism to the ecosystem.
This artwork is presented in collaboration with programme partner Jij bent M.

About the artist

Art and design studio Estranged Studio, founded by Boris van Vree (1990) and Manno Dragstra (1994), creates immersive installations, light art, sculptures and scenography. Their work revolves around light, movement, material and spatial experience. We investigate how light, water, air and physical movement can change materials and spaces. Reuse, modularity and the relationship between a work and its environment are common threads throughout the practice of Estranged Studio. In addition to autonomous installations, the studio creates complete scenographies and stage designs for festivals, events and cultural locations. In addition to previous versions of the Watercolor installation that were shown at Awakenings Festival, Voodoo Village and Vonk Lichtkunst Festival, Boris and Manno developed the entire art direction of Bosburcht Festival (2024-2026) and the artwork Fluor Towers (2026), shown at Bosburcht, Echoes of Amsterdam and Het Nest Festival.
